Braun CD4/2 mods

#1 Beitrag von shangyien » 13.01.2020, 13:39

I apologise for posting in English. I thought some forum members might be interested in some photos of mods to my CD4/2. My friend Mr B, an audio technician in Shenzhen has magically transformed the sound to create a deep, warm soundstage. I have no idea what he did, but no doubt some on the forum can work it out from the photos. When I get organised I'll follow up with a YouTube video.

This is my first posting on this forum, but I have found a lot of important information on it. I am very grateful for what others have shared.

Regards,
Ian Sanderson

Hi Ian,
welcome to our Forum!
Well, I do apologise for not saying hello earlier, as it's not your first posting...
(...but maybe nobody could help you with the other one on speed issues with a C3).
Feel free to write in English, we can translate it if necessary.

It looks like your friend replaced some capacitors with ones of better quality or/and higher specifications, i.e. capacity, voltage, ESR (lower).
Uli did this, too, in his CD4/2 Revision und Tuning, and upgraded the OpAmps as well (NE5532 -> OPA2604).

It would be nice to know which [kind of] capacitors [and brand] your friend used for C185 and C184 (the two silver "cans").
And I see two AUDIO NOTE's, C168(?) and C166(?).
Would you / your friend provide a list specifying which cap's where replaced with which kind and specs, and what else was done?
Thank you very much!

Kind regards,
Gereon

Hall Ian,

Hello,
Unfortunately I didn't make a list, they were bipolar capacitors that are also used in the audio branch of crossovers of loudspeakers. I think it would have been Mundorf.
Greetings Uli

Thank you for the very warm welcome! I forgot that I had posted before about the speed problem on the CD3. A new belt fixed that problem. My friend Mr Bi in Shenzhen helped me to upgrade the caps in that cassette deck as well.

I will ask him for information on the components he replaced. He also made some changes to the circuit. He only speaks Chinese and the technical language is specialised, so it's a bit difficult for me to understand the explanation with my level of Chinese, but I will do my best. Mr Bi does a lot of CD player upgrades. I have often listened to the results in his workshop. He also did capacitor and circuit upgrades to my Chinese valve amps.

Regards,
Ian

One more thing. I have uploaded a video of it in Mr Bi's workshop/studio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAqqT7D_mgU

Hi Ian,

at first glance there is no change to the circuit detectable (on the top side of the main board), so maybe he did some things on the other side of the board with the soldering.
If your friend could take a the curcuit diagram and / or the picture of the board and sketch the changes / mark the replaced caps would be great!

You can find everything needed for that here.
The layout of the board is on page 18, the curcuit diagram on 3-33 and 3-34 (the last two pages).
Your friend may have used these service information already to work on the player...

The youtube video shows Mr. Bi likes the tube (i.e. valve) sound - does your friend know Mr. Lukasz Fikus, the "Lampizator"?
About 10 years ago this guy "tuned" a lot of CD players by bypassing the opamps and using a tube pre amp stage instead.

Yours, Gereon

Hi Ian,
